Neville's youthful episodes of street paralysis

About thirty years earlier, when Neville was a young professional dancer playing Broadway, he would repeatedly be halted while walking up the street — unable to put one foot in front of the other, fully alert but paralysed for a few minutes until whatever held him released him; he later concluded he had been used as a guinea pig by someone being introduced to the same power he himself would later be shown.
