In that same call, days before his death, Neville told the Mrs. Murphy joke — holy water from Lourdes that turns out to be scotch ('it's another miracle') — which Carter only later read as Neville announcing his coming demise: there are no relics at Lourdes. [Date evidence: same phone call, 'a few days before our dinner party' — late September 1972] [Place: by telephone]
- c. September 1972
He said, Mrs. Murphy went off to Lourdes to see the holy relics, and while she was there, she saw the braces and she saw the crutches, and when she was coming back through the customs, a customs inspector said, Mrs. Murphy, do you have anything to declare? ... He said, Mrs. Murphy, this is not a bottle of water, this is a bottle of scotch. And she said, down on your knees and pray to the Holy Father, it's another miracle. ... So I'm sure you're not surprised that he announced his coming demise in a form of a joke.
Neville (as quoted): "Mrs. Murphy went off to Lourdes to see the holy relics... down on your knees and pray to the Holy Father, it's another miracle."
