Phoning to finalize the dinner-party arrangement a few days before his death, Neville told Carter he had suddenly realized — and had told his wife — that the Last Supper story is not about Judas's betrayal but is his own experience of preaching the Word of God; Carter replied that he had seen Neville die as Judas. I must go back to a few days before. I called to finalize the arrangement for the dinner party. He said, you know, I was sitting here in silence gathering my thoughts, and I suddenly realized something. I went into my sweetheart and I said, darling, you know the story of the Last Supper and Judas' betrayal. It isn't that at all. The story of the Last Supper is my experience of preaching the Word of God. That's what it's all about. At that, I broke in and I said, yes, and don't forget that I saw you die as Judas.
Neville (as quoted): "You know, I was sitting here in silence gathering my thoughts, and I suddenly realized something. I went into my sweetheart and I said, darling, you know the story of the Last Supper and Judas' betrayal. It isn't that at all. The story of the Last Supper is my experience of preaching the Word of God. That's what it's all about."
