Picking Neville up from the hospital on his last day, Carter approached from behind and found him hunkered over and bone-tired; tapped on the shoulder, Neville brightened and laughed with twinkling eyes over the line 'I have ways you know not of' (the transcript attributes the words to Neville, though Carter's aside suggests he himself spoke them). [Date evidence: Neville's last day (30 Sept 1972; he died during the following night)] [Place: the hospital, Los Angeles]
- 30 September 1972
I went back, and I picked him up at the hospital, and I excused myself for a minute, and I came back a different way. I came up behind him this time, and there he sat, sort of hunkered over, bone tired. I tapped him on the shoulder, and he looked around, and he brightened up. He regained himself. I said, you weren't expecting me this way, were you? He shook his head and said, I have ways you know not of. And he laughed, his eyes just twinkled. That was a great joke to him. I loved the look in his eyes when I said that. Those words were somehow put into my mouth. I don't know why I said it.
Neville (as quoted): "I have ways you know not of."
