Why Derived from the next-morning sequence; no preference set.
Reasoning The continuous first-hand account places the questioning immediately after Neville was found dead the morning following their final dinner. Neville's death is independently established as 1972-10-01, so this questioning occurred that morning; the calendar date is derived from the sequence.
Verbatim (witness's words)

The coroner questioned me, was Mr. Goddard a heavy drinker? With that, his daughter broke in. She said, he used to be a few years ago, but not in recent years. The coroner asked me again, did he have a lot to drink last night? I said no. Then I suddenly remembered everything that had happened about the drinks, the fact that he didn't even finish his second drink. I said, he didn't even finish his second drink. He gave it to me. Why are you asking me all these questions? The coroner said, we don't understand all the blood.
