The day before leaving New York, Neville went to say goodbye to Mary at her eighth-floor metaphysical library The Gateway; in the self-run elevator a young man boarded on the fourth floor with orchids on a bonsai for the Duchess of Windsor, and Neville said 'Do give her my love', leaving the man tormented on the street trying to work out who he was.
