Lecture agent Mr. Peakings declines to book the unknown Neville

When his first book came out in 1941, Harper Brothers sent the then-unknown Neville to the veteran lecture agent Mr. Peakings, who told him he could only sell names and joked that if Neville shot someone and got off he could be booked across the country.
