Neville returns an unexplained bank overpayment

This past week Neville made a deposit at the bank on Monday, bought papers at Martindale's and an item at Jurgensen's, and next day on the way to the barber found twenty dollars more than he should have; he went back Wednesday to return it, the bank denied a woman ever worked that window, and later the teller phoned claiming the IBM machine had found the discrepancy and a notice had been mailed.

Why The later phrase about a notice post-dated 'yesterday, Thursday' is internally inconsistent, as the lecture processing note records, and is not used to move the event beyond Wednesday.
Reasoning The complete account anchors the deposit to the preceding Monday, discovery to Tuesday, and Neville's bank return and teller call to Wednesday. Relative to the certain Friday 1965-01-08 delivery, those dates are 1965-01-04 through 1965-01-06; this narrows the existing 1965-01-02 through 1965-01-08 envelope.
