Neville speaks at Columbus Circle and finds ten dollars during the Depression

In his twenties, during the hard early years of the Depression, Neville describes going penniless one hot summer night to the old Columbus Circle in New York, where anyone could take a soapbox platform and speak to a crowd. Finding a man there denouncing the existence of God, Neville asked for the platform and spoke in defense of the Bible, drawing part of the crowd over to his side. When he stepped down afterward, he found a ten-dollar bill at his foot; when onlookers challenged that it wasn't his, he told them he'd hand it over to whoever could give him its serial number -- and kept it, since no one could.

  1. between 1929 and 1934 relative · possible · preferred
Source The Witness of the Spirit ¶51passage 532967 (lecture nid 1203), 'when I was a young man in my twenties and the depression was on'; corroborated by passage 547758 (lecture nid 1882), 'back in the deep, deep days of the Depression'
Reasoning Combining 'in my twenties' with the corpus's accepted 1905 birth date for Neville (hist_event:950) gives roughly 1925-1934; overlapping this with the Depression years (beginning 1929) narrows the window to 1929-1934. 'The deep, deep days of the Depression' suggests the earlier, harder part of that window rather than the later end, but no month or exact year is given in either telling.

  1. 4 May 1965 estimated
Source The Witness of the Spiritdelivery claims on lecture nid 1203: catalog #277 (certain, preferred) plus an independent chrome dateline and an internal alternating-meeting weekday pattern, all converging on 1965-05-04
Reasoning Three independent lines of evidence converge on this date with no conflict: the legacy catalog claim, the transcript's own chrome header, and an internal 'last Friday' alternating-meeting pattern matching the correct weekday. Written at certain confidence.
  2. 22 March 1968 estimated
Source States Meditating Beingdelivery claims on lecture nid 1882: an independently-derived estimate from same-day Vietnam-command-change news (d1) exactly matches a recovered chrome dateline (d2), both landing on 1968-03-22
Reasoning Two independent methods -- a document chrome dateline and internal current-events content (General Westmoreland's relief from Vietnam command, announced 22 March 1968) -- converge on the identical day, with no conflicting claim on this lecture. Written at certain confidence.
  3. 22 March 1968 estimated
Source States Meditating Being ¶36passage 547758 (lecture nid 1882, 'States Meditating Being'), delivery claim 1968-03-22 exact/certain (recovered chrome dateline '3/22/68', confirmed, cross-confirmed by the same-day Westmoreland-relief-from-Vietnam-command news)
Reasoning Passage 547758 is Neville himself telling the Columbus Circle Depression story, ending with finding a ten-dollar bill at his foot after stepping down from the platform. The lecture containing it (nid 1882) has three agreeing delivery claims converging on 1968-03-22 at certain confidence; the telling inherits that same date and confidence.
